<idAbs>This spatial dataset of test holes and samples is based on a compilation of GIS aggregate resources (sand and gravel, crushed stone) reconnaissance scale data spanning seven county projects completed since 2000 by the DNR's Aggregate Resource Mapping Program (ARMP). The test hole site and sample data was collected to verify the presence or absence of sand and gravel at selected test hole sites from 7 completed Aggregate Mapping Program counties and continues presently. Selected test holes were sampled for aggregate gradations and/or construction aggregate quality specifications. The Minnesota Department of Transportation completed the lithological exam for construction aggregate quality. </idAbs>
<idPurp>To summarize the test hole sites and samples taken in 7 of the Aggregate Mapping Completed Counties.
About the Aggregate Resource Mapping Program:
The Aggregate Resource Mapping Program (ARMP) began in 1984 when the Minnesota Legislature passed a law (Minnnesota Statutes, section 84.94) to: Identify and classify aggregate resources out side of the Twin Cities metropolitan area; Give aggregate resource information to local units of government and others for making comprehensive land-use and zoning plans; Introduce aggregate resource protection; and Promote orderly and environmentally sound development of the resource.

<stepDesc>This varies since the data is a compilation of points collected since 2000. Please consult the original project metadata found at the Aggregate Mapping Program's completed project page at: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lands_minerals/aggregate_maps/completed/index.html Generally speaking, a tablet PC, a Garmin GPS Bluetooth unit, ArcGIS software, and the GPS toolbar in ArcMap were used in the field to determine the track and location of the observer collecting the points. Testhole points and associated tabular attribute were updated in real time as much as possible. The combination of the GPS unit's location, USGS topographic maps (1:24,000), and aerial photographs (1:3,000 - 1:12,000) were used to assist in determining the observation's site location on screen. At other times a portable Garmin Etrex or a GPS equipped iPhone were used instead of the above mentioned hardware and software. The GPS unit (with differential correction) is accurate to approximately a few meters.</stepDesc>
